About event

What stories are hidden behind the distant horizon?

Writers Lina Nordquist from Sweden and Katja Kallio from Finland accepted the invitation to this year's Days of the North festival. In their books, both tell about life in sparsely populated areas and unravel complex interpersonal relationships, which are also influenced by the political situation.

Lina Nordquist's layered novel I'll go with you is the story of a family that at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries flees Norway and finds refuge in an abandoned cottage in Hälsingland, Sweden. However, hardships accompany Unni, Armoda and their son Roara even in the new country. Seventy years later, 50-year-old Kåra is sitting in her cottage preparing the funeral of her father-in-law Roar. Dark family secrets slowly surface. What actually happened after Roar's parents came to the cottage? And what were they running away from?

Katja Kallio's historical novel Translucent Heart thematizes the love of two people from hostile countries. The year is 1942, and a young single mother, Beata, returns home with her parents and sisters to the war-ravaged southern Finnish peninsula of Hanko. Here, during a fleeting meeting, she burns with love for the Russian prisoner of war Ivan, whose language she does not understand, but something unites them - both are rejected by society. Nevertheless, Beata has to hide her feelings, because love for an enemy is tantamount to betrayal.

You can find us at the Scout Institute on Staromák in a room called Studio. Hosted by Martina Šímová, actress Marie Jansová reads examples. Swedish and Finnish, translated into Czech. Free entry
