Jana Gombiková was born in Trenčín. She is a graduate of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and the Institute of Creative Photography in Opava. In his creative work, he deals with the themes of individual and collective memory, identity and subjective experience, often working with a combination of text and image.

According to the latest scientific studies, when recollecting memories, we do not reproduce what we remember, but reconstruct it. Whenever we remember an event, we try to fill in the gaps, reinterpret details, or add new information based on our current knowledge, emotions, or intuitions, or based on the current shape of our personal story. Every time we return to a memory, we create a new version of the story, and thus "predicting" the past - or even accurately understanding it - is almost impossible.

In my series, "The hardest thing is to predict the past", I explore the process of how memory works and the possibility of constructing alternative versions of one's own story using the medium of photography. By re-scanning and intervening in my own negatives, I create new interpretations of what is recorded, just as it happens when remembering. Unlike digital photography, analog material is physical evidence of the existence of a given moment. However, like a memory, a photograph is not a record of reality, but rather a fragment or interpretation of it. But is the person who looks at the photographs today the same person who created them?

Our memories shape us in the same way as we shape them.

The exhibition is an activity of the project With roots in Trenčín, which is part of Trenčín 2026.

The project is financially supported by the City of Trenčín, the Trenčín Self-Governing Region, the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and the European union.
