About event
PAINTER JOSEF KOTRBA II FOUND
The discovery of paintings from the estate of the architect and naive painter Josef Kotrba (1896–1983) was a great surprise and also an inspiring stimulus. The first part of the exhibition in 2023 aroused interest among the public and collectors, but it was far from exhausting the entire collection of Kotrb's paintings. Therefore, the second part is now being presented to the public, in the preparation and implementation of which the Museum of the Czech Karst in Beroun participates. The merit of this collaboration is new knowledge about the life and work of Josef Kotrba, for example specifying the year of his death and tracking down his only known and published photograph and reports about his work as an architect and builder in Králové Dvór. Information about another part of Josef Kotrba's estate also came from the initiative of the first part of the exhibition. It is said to have contained a considerable number of drawings, building plans and photographs, but almost all of it has disappeared because its significance was not previously recognized. Only a few pieces have survived, among them Self-Portrait as Charlie Chaplin, whom Josef Kotrba was supposed to resemble. We cordially invite you to the sales exhibition called Found painter Josef Kotrba II, which we are organizing from September 19 to October 31.
NAIVE ART
The history of modern art records repeated waves of interest in non-professional creation, for which the name naive art has been adopted in the general consciousness. Untrained painters and sculptors represent a kind of parallel, internally differentiated world existing alongside and outside of art. Over time, a number of professional names emerged for this phenomenon, among others: naive art, instinctive art, spontaneous art, primitivism (without pejorative content), the French term art brut, in English Outsider Art, Self-taught Art, Visionary Art, in Italian arte irregulare , in German naive Kunst, Irrenkunst. Some of them try to cover the entire issue, while others, on the contrary, reflect various materially and formally incompatible subcategories of this broad field. They include, for example, children's drawing and painting, amateur creations, folk art, media creations, self-taught creations and naive art in the true sense of the word.
