About event

On the margins of freedom, where borders blur and certainty dissolves, one finds strange self-enchantments like Rimbaud's "free freedom" — an unlimited anarchic liberation that rises to the impotence of freedom, lawless poetry that opens the void to excess of desire and surpasses the paradoxes of autonomy into realms of pure potentiality. The Universe could perfectly dispense with Life: it is from this superfluity that its strength and boldness come. Thrown into existence without a net, under the starry sky, it is in life that nature plays the game of overcoming itself, faced with the constant threat of being enslaved by the given, crushed by the laws of the cosmos or reduced to nothing (its irreversible destiny) . Fully accepting freedom means transforming it into its opposite, since it is only in denial that freedom can overcome itself. Abandoning the known to depend solely on the power of the unknown (essential value) implies nothing less than a desire for the impossible.

Jonas Runa is a researcher and artist working in the field of new media art, performance and multimedia, sound sculptures, light art, video installation, improvisation and musical composition and contemporary dance. He is also an Associate Professor at Universidade Lusófona, where he holds the positions of director of the Degree in Sound Science and Technology and the Master's Degree in Production and Sound Technologies. His artistic work has been presented at the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, at the 55th and 56th Venice Biennale, 798 Art District (Beijing), ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Galerie Scheffel (Frankfurt), Fundação Logos (Gent), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago de Chile) , Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), Arnold Schoenberg Hall (Netherlands), Yorkshire Sculpture Park (United Kingdom), among others. He has a degree in Sonology from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague (Netherlands) and a PhD in Science and Technology of Arts from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. He developed the CEEC individual post-doctoral project Sound at the Edge of Consciousness, based at FCSH/Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and was co-main investigator of the TEPe — Technologically Expanded Performance project, both funded by FCT. He founded the duo ZUL ZELUB with Jorge Lima Barreto, in 2007, for piano and electronic art music. He is editor, scientific coordinator and co-author of the book O Elogio da Abertura: Essays and Dialogues on the Materiality of Aesthetic Communication (Documenta/Sistema Solar, 2024). In 2021, he was elected to the Young Scientists Seminar of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

More information:
This conference is part of the conference cycle Other Spaces < br/>
The «Outros Espaços» conference cycle is a partnership between the Centro Cultural de Belém, the School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies (ECATI) and the Center for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies (CICANT) at Universidade Lusófona — Centro Universitário de Lisboa.
Presenting itself as a space for plural dialogue, this partnership seeks to connect academic and scientific production to the community and provide the transmission of knowledge. The action that each institution carries out includes the activation of thematic synergies between areas such as visual arts, cinema, performing arts and sound arts, communication and culture, architecture and new digital devices.

«The margins of freedom» , 2024
The theme for the year 2024 programming focuses on thinking on the margins of freedom in all its aspects — from the visual arts, through cinema, to architecture, to the concept of the political and to culture in general . In a year that marks the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, without wanting to overlap with programs related to the celebrations, we propose to think about how, in moments of restriction of freedom, in spaces of directed movement, human beings were, both individually and in communities created for this purpose, reacting to the limits imposed on them. In this way, moments and spaces were created in which individual and collective experience, more explicitly or more surreptitiously, knew how to extend the impositions that each historical moment and its places were conditioning.
