West German relations with Egypt in the post-war period were shaped by actors who were in their mental orientations and political beliefs were shaped by the legacies of National Socialism. Officials from the old Foreign Office, who had helped shape anti-Western and anti-Semitic policies during the Second World War, influenced the federal government's political positioning in the conflict between Egypt and Israel in the context of the Cold War. But non-state actors, such as former National Socialists and Wehrmacht generals, as well as members of the National Socialist arms elite, also played a central role in shaping German-Egyptian relations in the post-war period. A former SS leader also played a decisive role, who controlled the expropriated Czech armaments industry for the “Reichswerke Hermann Göring” during the Second World War. Some of the German armaments experts who built fighter planes and missiles for Egypt in the 1960s also had a connection to Prague as Sudeten Germans. Self-identified as “expelled people,” some of them in Egypt identified with the fate of the Palestinians. The lecture highlights the extent to which German-Egyptian relations were shaped by the Nazi past and how a transformed form of anti-Semitism emerged after the Second World War.
