About event
🎞️🎶 We invite you to the Silent Film & Live Music event, which will take place in the Great Recording Studio of Radio Regina Východ at Moyzesova 7. The prominent Dutch composer and lutenist Jozef Van Wissem will play the screening of the silent film THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI.
🎼 "It's like a part of my body," says Jozef Van Wissem about his relationship with his chosen instrument, the lute. "Its complexity drives me forward because you always find something new."
The ability to constantly choose something different and explore new areas is evident throughout Wissem's extensive catalog up to his latest album The Night Dwells in the Day. Over the years he has collaborated with Jim Jarmusch and Tilda Swinton, releasing award-winning video game soundtracks as well as award-winning film soundtracks, from Jarmusch's Only Lovers Will Live to Pierre Creton's 2023 film The Prince.
Jozef Van Wissem will premiere his new live score for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). The music consists, among other things, of cinematic hypnotizing compositions for slide lute, slow drones of electric guitars, found sound, electronics and spoken word.
📽️ THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI is often referred to as the first expressionist work. Its magic lies above all in the unprecedented solution of the art scene, which was procured by the group of young avant-garde artists DER STURM. They perfectly created the fantastic decorations of warped, deformed surfaces and the overall impression of an unreal world, which, together with tense acting performances, significant make-up of the actors and a bizarre combination of lights and shadows, gives the picture the necessary impact.
Caligari could also be understood as a metaphor for post-war Germany, full of worries and concerns about the current situation and fear of the future. Caligari is supposed to represent the system of that time, state authority, and Cesare is just a puppet in his hands, who follows orders and dies for the sake of the cause.
