About event
"Unfulfilled promise"
Conversation with Sergey Bondarenko
and Joshua Jaffa.
Sergey Bondarenko is the author of the book “Lost in memory. Society for the Memorial and the struggle for the past in Russia, an employee of the Memorial Society.
Joshua Yaffa - New Yorker journalist, employee Bard College Berlin, author of Between Two Fires: Truth, Ambition, and Compromise in Putin's Russia Orwell for the political letter of 2021.
For almost four decades, the Memorial society has passed the way from the surroundings of the Lubyanka and the opening projects of the KGB archives to the liquidation by the Russian court and the Nobel Prize of the World.
Activists and supporters of the movement came up with different memorials and called them either a new political party or a “monument”. They had to fix the new status quo-the Stalinist past, it will not return forever, it will no longer return.
In 2025, we return to these projects and hopes as an unfulfilled promise and we talk about what happened and did not happen to history over the years, what the memorial was doing-and what, perhaps, had not had to do it and suffered a defeat. And what should he do now?
Important topics and problems, for the resolution of which the memorial was taken, have not disappeared today:
How to make a visible history of state terror?
How to learn to work with a memory of it?
And what to do when, along with the changed time, you have to apply many of the developed principles to protect yourself?
Come to this important conversation!
