About event
Rurik van Heys - piano (D)
Hendrik Nehls - bass (D)
Bernd Ratmeyer - drums (CH)
Piano trios are numerous in the jazz world, but Night Train stands out from the crowd: such fundamentally honest swing combined with a highly original approach to the jazz tradition is rarely heard. Intelligent, funny arrangements, big band quotes and an almost relentless groove - Night Train has no need for the artistic elitism that the jazz guild sometimes self-absorbedly pays homage to and likes to play past the audience. Night Train takes the audience seriously: from the elegant stage presence to the charming announcements to the energetic music.
Night Train doesn't come across as old-fashioned, on the contrary, many a frequently played standard gets a fresh face. There is so much energy that you don't even miss the dozen or so brass players despite the many references to the big bands of Count Basie, Woody Herman and Thad Jones.
Rurik van Heys: Stride piano, blues, swing and classic modern jazz: the man is well trained. His love for role models like Gene Harris, Oscar Peterson and Horace Silver has taken him across Germany and Europe for 30 years. Like him, no one can simulate a complete big band on the piano.
Hendrik Nehls: Classically trained, but influenced by the relentless swing and groove of Ray Brown, inspired by contemporaries like Christian McBride and learned from Ron Carter, among others: Hendrik Nehls is one of the few young bassists in the Berlin and German jazz scene who really swings. A true rhythm engine and therefore the ideal line-up for Berlin's smallest big band.
Bernd Ratmeyer: Dynamic, chamber music playing in a trio; driving engine in the big band: No wonder Night Train has this particular drummer. Bernd Ratmeyer learned his craft from big band authorities such as Ronnie Stevenson, Holger Nell and Jeff Hamilton, among others.
