About event
No less than 130,000 years ago in time, to the Nijl horses and the Neanderthals who now lived where IJburg, the IJmeer and the Markermeer are located.
An evening with Frans Roescher of the Dutch Archeology Association.
Did you know that the sprayed sand of IJburg tells that 130,000 years?
The sand is from Zandputten in the Markermeer. Surprising things are hidden in the sand, such as fossil bones and tools of flint, all from Neanderthals. Frans Roescher has been collecting those kinds of objects, in close collaboration with the Dutch archeology association.
On this evening you see and hear beautiful images and stories from and about the fossil remains that Frans and all those others have found. For example, it concerns animals from the last ice age, such as mammoths, woolly rhinos, reindeer and stepping wis.
Extra special is that everything was found from the warm time before the last ice age. It is now known that there was a lagoon area here with a climate that could be compared to what we find today in Central France. There were hippos, forest nose horns, forest elephants and even lions and hyenas around!
The Neanderthals lived between the violence of these animals. They also stopped when the climate changed and the last ice age arrived. Many flint tools and edited antlers and bones have been found of them.
You can safely say that IJburg is a prehistoric hotspot!
Evening organized together with IJburg you participate.
