About event
The exhibition "Threads of Memories - Fates of Women in the Gulag" will show the life of women in Soviet camps. To capture fragments of everyday life, she uses, among other things, photographs of handicrafts and objects connected to the stories of 26 specific women. The exhibition also includes several authentic exhibits. Some of the stories also have a distinct Czech trace.
🪡 Political repression in the Soviet Union was massive. The state punished not only for crimes, but also for belonging to a certain category of the population, for example social, religious or ethnic, or nationality, including the Czech one. Of course, there were also women in each of these groups.
🪡 Female prisoners in the camps, however, were often able to find the mental and moral strength not to give up and to keep hope for a future meeting with their children and loved ones. Clothes and small items that they were able to make in the camp, mostly from pieces of cloth, often helped them to do this. Threads are therefore the central motif that connects the entire exhibition.
