Discussions and lectures
About event
We cordially invite you to the next lecture and subsequent discussion from the cycle Middle Ages in motion / Dialogues.
Contributions on the topic New perspectives on the Vyšebrod Altarpiece will be presented by Jan Royt (Institute for the History of Art, FF UK) and Petr Jindra (West Bohemian Gallery) in Pilsen).
The lecture will take place on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. in the meeting room (hall 117) of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Husova 4, Prague 1.
The set of nine plates from the monastery in Vyšší Brod belongs to the most brilliant, the most studied, but also the most unanswered questions that constantly open works of art in 14th century Bohemia. More than 50 years have passed since the publication of Jaroslav Pešina's monograph, during which not only the social context and methodology of the field have changed significantly, but also the sum of our knowledge of society, culture and art at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV. and the state of the monument fund itself. From this point, we can consider a new monographic treatment of this supreme topic of Czech art-historical medieval studies. The researchers who have made the most significant contribution to the topic in the last decade will present and present some of their recent findings and observations for discussion.
Jan Royt works at the Faculty of Philosophy and Catholic Theology of Charles University and at a number of other domestic universities . It deals with older art and iconography from the early Christian era to the end of the Baroque period, with a specialization in medieval painting and Christian iconography. He is the author of numerous articles and monographs (e.g. Medieval Painting in Bohemia, 2002 or Master of the Třeboňského oltáře, 2013). As a co-author, he participated in a number of international and domestic exhibition projects (e.g. Master Theodoric, Charles IV. Emperor of God's Mercy, Without Borders: Art in Northwest Bohemia between Gothic and Renaissance, etc.).
Petr Jindra studied art history at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague and works as a curator at the West Bohemian Gallery in Pilsen. It focuses on medieval art, primarily from the point of view of iconography/iconology in a wider historical and cultural context. He also deals with modern Czech art and occasionally writes about contemporary art. Together with Michaela Ottová, he curated the exhibitions Images of Beauty and Salvation. Gothic art in southwestern Bohemia (2013) and More beautiful than the sun. The Pilsen Madonna and a Beautiful Style (2020–2021) and co-edited the related exhibition catalogs.
