The year is 1964. Richard Burton has recently married Elizabeth Taylor and is about to play the title role in a new experimental production of Hamlet on Broadway, under the precise direction of John Gielgud. But during rehearsals, the two theatrical ages they represent clash so much that the collaboration between actor and director begins to break down.
A wildly entertaining new play about the relationship between art and fame was written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). . Mark Gatiss and Johnny Flynn in the roles of famous acting legends John Gielgud and Richard Burton are directed by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, NT Live: The Lehman Trilogy).
The production won the Evening Standard award for best new the play was filmed live during a sold-out run at Britain's National Theatre. The stage was created by Es Devlin (NT Live: Hamlet, The Lehman Trilogy, The Witches of Salem), also starring Tuppence Middleton (War and Peace) and Luke Norris (Poldark). Jiří Voskovec also appears in the play!
