About event
Civic Atrium: What is at stake in the upcoming referendum?
Discussion on citizens' decision-making
The referendum is one of the most powerful tools that citizens have directly in their hands in a democracy. Despite this, we rarely use it and it rarely becomes the subject of wider public discussion.
What does a referendum actually mean? When does it help strengthen democracy and when, on the contrary, can it divide society? How does it work in Slovakia and abroad? And what is at stake in the upcoming referendum, which will be decided by the citizens of the Slovak Republic?
We invite you to the next meeting of the discussion series Občianske Atrium, during which we will talk not only about the current referendum, but also about the wider meaning of direct democracy, citizen participation and the possibilities of citizens to influence public events.
Guests
Grigorij Mesežnikov – political scientist, co-founder and president of the Institute for Public Issues, long-time analyst of Slovak politics and democracy.
Lajos Mészáros – former constitutional judge and expert in constitutional law.
Zuzana Janíčková – civil activist, artist and cultural manager.
Peter Tatar – co-founder of Public against Violence and co-founder of Civic Community.
Moderated by Timotej Lauko
manager of the Civic Community
Every month we bring current social topics, interesting guests and space for open discussion.
We look forward to meeting you.
