As part of the professional seminars of our institute under the auspices of the scientific council, we hereby invite you to a lecture by our colleague Andrej Belák on the topic "Meadows in the care trap: why can't farmers do more for biodiversity?".
The event will take place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 from 1 p.m. Bratislava.

Carpathian meadows and pastures, for centuries co-created by small-scale farming with animals, on a small scale exceed the biodiversity of rainforests. They make our country more colorful, more resistant, and for us also more beautiful - without them it seems too wild and inhospitable to us. However, these meadows have been on the decline since the middle of the 20th century, both in terms of area and species richness. Somewhere for abandonment (and absorption by forests) and somewhere, on the contrary, for the intensification of farming (and soil degradation). What prevents farming families who can maintain such meadows from doing better today? Despite policies and subsidies aimed at reversing the bad trend? In what sense do these families, together with their meadows, find themselves in the trap of care? What do interspecies community relations, a culture of self-sufficiency, Buzalka's post-settlers, age-old extractivism of cities against the countryside, collectivization, the global market, payment agencies, bourgeois fascination with wilderness, hunters and tourists have to do with it? What about reductionist approaches in research? Presentation of the social-scientific outputs of the transdisciplinary projects MEADOW - Species-rich meadows and pastures of the Carpathians: mapping, history, causes of changes and protection (APVV-21-0226) and G4B - Grasslands for biodiversity: supporting the protection of the biodiversity-rich grasslands and related management practices in the Alps and Carpathians (Biodiversa2021-532).
