Olga Karlíková
I Have a Persistent Feeling of Sadness
curated by Pavlína Morganová
12/04 – 14/06/2025
Olga Karlíková was an exceptional personality in Czech art. She was not only a painter and an acclaimed textile designer, but also a ‘listening observer’’ of life. Her visual recordings of birdsongs still fascinate the viewer by their refined and conceptual nature. From the end of the 1970s, she lived in seclusion in close contact with nature. Already then, she recognised and was deeply affected by the devastation of the planet and was interested in ecological issues.
When in 1995, art historian and curator Marcela Pánková asked Karlíková in an interview for the anthology Forbidden Art: “In conclusion, can you tell me how you feel now, almost six years after the events of November 1989?”, this unexpected answer came : "I have a persistent feeling of sadness because of the devastation of nature and the planet..." Today, Karlíková's grief about the environment has become a widely shared emotion. The aim of the current exhibition is to commemorate the life and work of this unique artist and to present her lesser-known early and late works, whose environmental character resonate with the current crises of the contemporary world.
