About event
Can you continue to make music in the war? Does music give comfort or strength? Is keeping making music an act of resistance? Is music an escape - an escapade - to the harsh reality of daily existence?
And has the music himself - apart from his Creator - existence or can music be infected? Is something unheard of to play and beautiful music is therefore not allowed to be heard anymore?
80 years after the Second World War, these questions are more central than ever. A story about the power of music, even in the darkest periods of life.
The music of Leo Smit had long been forgotten. But in recent years his work has been getting more and more global attention through the use of the Leo Smit Foundation. In the beautiful viola concert, the young violaists of the NJSO present themselves as a soloist. Also in the other works in small occupation our own members of the NJSO.
In addition to the - unheard of beautiful - viola concert by Leo Smit, we celebrate the Amsterdam music life with a variety of Dutch (Amsterdam) composers with the NJSO. From the 18th century Amsterdam pub violist and composer Pieter Hellendaal, to the surprising music Henriëtte Bosmans. With music by Dick Kattenburg (friends with Leo Smit) to the music of the Romantiche composer and music scientist Hans Brandts Buys.
After the break, the young musicians of the NJSO are looking for the borders with music of three Russian composers in changing occupations.
