About event
In the heart of today's busy city, between 29. Augusta Street and Karadžičová Street, there is an oasis of silence, where time passes differently. Ondrejský cemetery, founded in 1784, is one of the oldest preserved city cemeteries in Bratislava. It was once the final resting place of thousands of residents of Prešpork - from important personalities to ordinary craftsmen and soldiers - and today it is a rare historical park with a touch of ancient times.
On the Bratislava Wanderings, we will follow the footsteps of his story and explore what he can tell us.
The city established a new cemetery on the outskirts of Prešpork at the time, dedicated to St. Ondrej. Its location already speaks of how much Bratislava has grown since the end of the 18th century - the cemetery, which once lay behind the walls, is now surrounded by modern buildings.
During the tour, we will notice that Ondrejský cintorín is not only a place of piety, but also a unique open-air museum. Here we can find baroque, classicist and art nouveau tombstones, each with its own story. Some are the works of renowned sculptors, others are simple, but all the more sincere memories of families. On the epitaphs, we can read about professions, family relationships, even about events that shook the city - plague epidemics, wars or fires. Among them are townspeople, architects, artists, priests and soldiers.
The cemetery is also a witness to the multicultural character of Prešpork: we can find inscriptions here in Slovak, German, Hungarian and Latin, which reflects the diverse linguistic and national composition of the city.
Today Ondrejský cintorín is a city monument zone. A walk through its streets is a journey into the past, not only to the stories of the deceased, but also to the atmosphere of the old Prešpork, which no longer exists. Therefore, our story will not only focus on the stone tombstones, but also on the life of the people who are buried here, on their everyday life, joys and worries, professions, faith and values.
Join us and discover the Ondrejský cemetery as a place where natural beauty, artistic value and historical memory intertwine. Each tombstone here has its own voice and we will try to hear it on this tour.
Due to the number of personalities at the Ondrejský cemetery, we will introduce them in turn in three circuits.
