About event

From a monologue to a shared stage

What is it about?

In a country that was divided into East and West, differences and various “images” are still present. Decades after the end of the GDR, there is still a kind of invisible wall between East and West citizens. People who were socialized in the GDR often feel like second-class citizens. Your biography is perceived as devalued. For many people from West Germany, the east of the republic is very far away and they associate East Germany with: Pegida, Nazis, AFD, the solidarity surcharge. Many resentments have found a home in both West and East Germany. A lot of experiences remain in a bubble and do not receive the appropriate relevance or recognition.

“East-West Dialogues” is a creative theater-educational project with biographical work that gets to the bottom of these topics and offers spaces for exchange between young adults, but also between generations. In this project, individual monologues and biographical work create lively dialogues. We accompany exchanges with others from the inner voice of experienced and told experiences and associated images. What happens when we start listening to what really divides us and what connects us? How much do we dare to say and what remains hidden within us? A jointly developed performance will invite you to question “images”, expand your own perspectives and embark on a journey of discussion and understanding together. Because what we think about each other often determines how we treat each other. But: What is possible and different if we overcome these barriers?
Monologues become dialogues

“East-West Dialogues” begins with our own experiences – the resulting monologue in Workshop 1 (December 2025). Each participant shares their own stories and experiences from East and/or West. But the project continues. It turns into a dialogue - a conversation that takes place on stage (January 2026). What happens when monologues collide? When words from different worlds meet? Dialogue is the key to understanding and change.

The monologues first take the participants on a journey through the history of Germany and take a look at personal experiences and images between East and West. This not only creates exciting conversations, but also creative conflicts of experiences, perceptions, missing perspectives and relevance, which initially make you think.

The participants in the project come from very different perspectives - young adults and other generations from East and West who only partly know divided Germany from their own experience. Each monologue brings a different perspective, and yet there are always points of contact where understanding for each other grows.

What begins with monologues ultimately becomes a joint work: a visual theater piece that brings the resulting monologues to the stage with musical accompaniment. The piece will be a living reflection of the experiences and creative processes that emerged from this project. During the workshop days, the participants and the audience at the play can look forward to a stimulating production that not only tells about the past, but also raises current questions about the future.

The performance of the monologues on stage is voluntary. Dialogues will already be given space among the participants in the workshops in December 2025 and January 2026.
The project is aimed at:

"East-West Dialogues" is aimed at (young) adults from East and West - at everyone who is curious about the stories of the other part of the country and who is open to new perspectives - who is ready to share their perspectives. It is explicitly intended for an intergenerational audience that is looking for exchange between generations and dialogue about different realities of life.

The project is limited to 20 participants. Registration is possible until October 30th, 2025.

To register, the following information will be requested in order to guarantee the desired group composition: name/first name, email address, number, age, place of residence, motivation and expectations of the project and the team members.

A decision will be communicated by November 5th, 2025. Participation in both workshops is required. The performance on January 19th, 2026 is voluntary - participation is desirable.
