About event

We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition Museum of Values - Pictorial Report on Slovakia, which will take place on December 11 at 5:00 PM in Pretoria on Nám. Štefan Moysesa 51/25 in Banská Bystrica.

An interactive exhibition from the collections of the Central Slovak Gallery seeks answers to the question "what is 'Slovak' in our art". He communicates the topic on the border between art, sociology and populism in a non-pathetic, patriotic, sober and valuable language. In recent years, this theme has been emptied and abused for low-level propaganda, but it has a strong background in collections and in the pictorial reservoir of our art. We want to present it without clichés, deposits and rigid constructions - in the form of an unorthodox experiential spatial composition. Slovak history? They are mostly talked about seriously, with lofty words and exaggerated gestures. We will try it differently. The Museum of Values exhibition will show the Slovak story without pathos, both historically and philosophically. History will not take the form of museum exhibits, but a living dialogue in which we ask: "what values did we have and what do we pretend to have?" Instead of the classic story about "great history" and documents, we will focus on the interweaving of data, commented on by clichés, but also exhibits strengthening healthy pride and patriotism. Visitors will see that the nation is not a ready-made quantity, but a constantly forming construct – formed by political decisions, cultural images and everyday life. The exhibition works with gallery collections - with big names such as Benka, Bazovský, Flache, but also representatives of contemporary art such as Šáteková, Blažo, Čerevka. The aim is to show the history of Slovakia through its image in art as a structured and multi-layered story, from which we will try to abstract the supernatural meanings and values that are hidden in them: courage, solidarity, but also stubbornness, humor or the ability to survive.
