About event
In December 1945, a fascist putsch took place in Prague, but no one noticed it. Its mastermind, Prague doctor Jan Lukeš, was arrested and hospitalized for his desire to disarm the entire world. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
In 1956, Professor Jaroslav Stuchlík publishes an article about his patient XY, who created 16 artificial languages. His contribution was surprising both because a legend of psychiatry came out of retirement, from whom no one expected much, and because no schizophrenic patient had ever created such an extensive language system.
That patient was none other than Dr. Lukeš — a dreamer who could not sleep, a linguist creating complicated systems so that people could understand each other better, a genius mixing high and low in such a way that in his operas the destruction of theatrical buildings and in love poetry to pornography. Many of his works did not survive, many of his inventions did not work. Unfortunately.
What has survived, however, is part of the correspondence between Dr. Lukeš and Professor Stuchlík. Explosive, touching, cruel and funny, the letters offer insight into a remarkable relationship where it is not clear who has the upper hand and who needs whom. What is certain is that the creations of that psychopathic wunderkind (as Lukeš described himself) are still fascinating.
