Paris
In the nineteenth century, Paris was one of the most important places for musicians to be successful, especially in the opera. Yet there were also composers who liked to make chamber music, and one of the best known is César Franck. His iconic Violin Sonate is one of the highlights of the repertoire. Prior to the Violin Sonate of Franck you will hear the atmospheric first Nocturne for Piano by Gabriel Fauré, a beautiful melancholic work. A much less well-known composer is Leon Boëllmann: in his short life he made a number of very nice compositions, such as the suite gothique for organ and the special piano quarters in f, opus 10 that you can listen to in this program.
