About event

The Group of Friends of Olivença (GAO) will participate in the ceremonies celebrating December 1st, thus reinforcing our commitment to the Cause of Olivença.

GAO invites all its associates and friends to join its delegation at 9am on December 1st in front of Casa do Alentejo, on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, leaving from there to be present in the Ceremonies.

The GAO will be present in the ceremonies commemorating the day of the Restoration of Independence, laying a wreath of flowers at the base of the Monument to the Restorers, paying tribute to them, but also remembering the Men and Women who in Olivença, in a border square, over the course of 28 years redeemed Portugal with their blood.

December 1st is a landmark date in the history of Portugal, celebrating the restoration of national independence. In 1640, after sixty years of insidious Spanish rule, the Portuguese crown was restored and D. João IV was proclaimed king, marking the return of Portugal's autonomy and sovereignty. On the 6th of December, the news was announced in Olivença, again and as always, the Oliventians, saluting their regained freedom, acclaimed their King and ensured respect for the motto that had been granted to him by the Kings of Portugal: NOBLE, LOYAL AND NOTEWORTHY VILLAGE OF OLIVENÇA!

Today Olivença cannot celebrate, with the other Portuguese, its Portugality. However, just as the Oliventians do not forget Portugal, Portugal also does not and cannot forget Olivença! The Oliventians need their homeland and the usurpation of Olivença, against History, Culture, Morals and Law, imposes on the Portuguese and, in particular, on those responsible for politics and the State, to effectively support the retrocession of that portion of Portugal. Despite the silence and indignity, Olivença remains Portuguese land!

With our flags we will remember that OLIVENÇA is PORTUGUESE LAND!
We count on your presence.
