About event
Everyone wants to look beautiful, well-groomed and elegant, this applies during calm times and during crises. It is therefore not surprising that even during the Second World War, which actively or passively marked the entire decade of the 1940s, we can see wonderful dresses and suits processed with the smallest details that we would not even be able to imagine today.
While in Europe suits and optimistic colorful dresses rule, often made up of many parts, which was an integral part of sewing with the rationing system, in the USA Art Deco is slowly disappearing, but leaving behind the beautiful "streamine" architecture and the elegance of the asymmetric and curvaceous "femme fatale" type that we can see in Hollywood films and which will later reach us. and so burlesque and pin-up artists abound, mixing a bit of humor and erotica into otherwise difficult times.
All this is topped off by a silhouette that changes relatively infrequently clothes, which will give the opportunity for details to stand out, rather than chasing frequent changes. But when the silhouette finally changes at the end of the decade, it's worth it, and so we go from masculine straight shoulders with padding, almost zero neckline, narrow waist, knee-length A-line skirt and wedge pumps to the hyper-feminine silhouette of Dior's "New Look" - round shoulders, raglan cut, long circle skirt, padded hips and even often a corset at the waist. But what is created and remains almost unchanged are women's trousers, which are finally gaining a permanent place in the women's wardrobe.
Men's fashion is also gradually changing. The trend in comfort and sporty looks continues, men wear knitted vests and Hawaiian shirts are becoming fashionable. They combine jackets and trousers of different colors so that they have more options even from a few clothes thanks to the rationing system. Pants and jackets and their aspects are regulated and thus relatively standardized - with a few exceptions, for example the American extremely wide "zoot suits". Accessories are often colorful and very patterned.
But what did ordinary people use to spice up their days? How was sewing done in salons and at home, and what tips and tricks did people use to beautify themselves in times of need? What exactly did Dior's New Look outrage society about and what was its alternative? What special material was used for the inside of the handbags? What underwear was commonly worn? Why were hats from this era sometimes referred to as "madhouse made"? How much did war and uniforms influence everyday men's or women's style? Why did the monocle stop being worn during the 1940s? Who were the "bedlies" and "divers"?
You will learn all this and, of course, much more during the next series of lectures on the history of 20th-century fashion in Aristokrat Vintage.
