Being Czech is not a given, but a task. So how to do it? And can we take lessons from history?
PAVEL KOSATÍK (1962)

Graduate of legal history at the Faculty of Law, Charles University in Prague, 1984. Worked as a publishing editor (Czech writer, co-founded publishing house Kdo je kdo, etc.). In the first half of the 1990s, he worked in newspapers (MF Dnes – editor, editor; Reflex – deputy editor-in-chief), later he was the editor-in-chief of the quarterly journal of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic Národní 3. In principle, however, he has been freelancing since 1996 and earns a living as a writer and screenwriter. Author of 30 books, mostly on modern Czech history, biographies (T. G. Masaryk, Jan Masaryk, Ferdinand Peroutka, Pavel Tigrid, Pavel Kohout, Věra Čáslavská, Emil Zátopek, etc.) and essays (České snění, Slovenské stolití, etc.). Screenwriter of a series of TV documentaries for Czech Television (12-part series Samizdat, 2001; Jan Masaryk I-II, 1998; Year 68 I-III, 2008 etc.). Screenwriter of feature films: 9-part TV series Czech Century (ČT 2013-2024), Conversations with TGM (Bedna Films 2018). Holder of the Ferdinand Peroutka Prize, the Tom Stoppard Prize, the Miroslav Ivanov Prize, etc. In 2024, he received an award from the President of the Republic for services to the state in the field of culture and art.
