About event

We invite you to a lecture by Czech sociologist Pavel Pospěch about his new book, Lonely Heroes.

We are all special. When we find our authentic selves, we will finally be happy. We have to arrange success and life satisfaction ourselves, no one will do it for us. We have the right to live our own lives.

How many times have we already heard such lessons and listen to them every day... They are all good-sounding advice, but like many good advices, they also have a catch: in the end, we will be on our own. In the book Lonely Heroes, Pavol Pospěch deals with the increasingly significant phenomenon of individualism and searches for its social roots and impacts on our everyday life. The explanations he offers are not generational, psychological or technological, but sociological. Neither pampered young generations nor ubiquitous social platforms are to blame for the rise in self-obsession. Individualism is a product of a specific culture in which we are raised from childhood and we are bound by it more deeply than we would think. The culture of individualism makes us the lonely heroes of our own lives and makes it more and more impossible for us to live a meaningful life with the people around us."

Pavel Pospěch is a sociologist and publicist. He works at Masaryk University and professionally researches cities, countryside and social theory. In the past, he worked as an assistant professor at the University of Vienna and as a visiting researcher at Yale university.

The event is financed from the resources of the project APVV-21-0394
