About event

Address: Benátská 433/2, 128 00, Prague 2.
The lecture takes place in the Krajinov auditorium B14 on the 1.5th floor.

The lecture will focus on the ethnological or folkloristic view of fairy tales as an anthropologically universal narrative performance present in all contemporary and historical cultures and societies. This anthropological view will then be compared with the contemporary understanding of the fairy tale as a specific children's literary genre with a significant pedagogical dimension, which developed in Europe from the 16th to the 19th century and which reduced the original functions and meanings of authentic fairy tales relatively significantly.

Petr Janeček is a Prague ethnologist and folklorist. He works as a docent and deputy director of the Institute of Ethnology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University; until 2013 he worked as the head of the Ethnographic Department of the National Museum. He completed research stays and conducted field and archival research in the USA, Austria, Poland and Slovenia. His research focuses primarily on research into contemporary verbal folklore and the theory, methodology and history of folkloristics. He publishes about verbal folklore and related topics in professional, cultural and social press.
