About event
The educational project of the Petržal Academy of Education continues with the fifth lecture of the historian PhDr. Juraj Červenka about the young pilots from Prešpork who fought and sacrificed their lives during the First World War in the years 1914-1918.
They risked their lives more than other soldiers. Did you know that during the First World War, airmen from Prešpork, who fought under the wings of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, made a significant contribution to the battles? Their origin was different, from aristocrats to young people from humble backgrounds. In a simplified way, we could conclude that the observers were mainly officers and actually commanders of the two-seater aircraft, while the pilots were of lower grades, sometimes unflatteringly referred to as "air drivers". However, this was especially true in the early stages of the conflict. Later, with the spread of more powerful single-seat fighters, fighter pilots also included officers, e.g. Captain Josef von Maier, commander of the legendary Imperial squadron.
Juraj Červenka has been working on this topic for a long time and he also published a book about Slovak pilots in the First World War.
The educational project was supported by public resources Fund for the support of art.
