About to unveil their fourth album, Oh My God – that's so me , Okay Kaya (née Kaya Wilkins) is at the height of ambivalent lyrical mastery. Known for her signature writing style that juxtaposes the lack of glamour, instinctivity and emotional difficulties of the human experience with saccharine and ravishing vocal melodies, she embarks on a path that explores more deeply all of the above through a meta-examination of language as a concept.
An enduring ability to connect beauty with the banality of everyday life that makes Kaya's writing a one-of-a-kind skill.
+ Anastasia Coope
The feeling that Anastasia Coope's music conveys seems to emanate from a precipice beyond the material world, like a void or a pressing memory against the veil. It's demanding and enveloping, but unrelated to space and time: ghostly, spectral and distant folk. ‘Darning Woman’, her debut album, feels like a dispatch from another past. Like lullabies or nursery rhymes, its minimal folk instrumentation contorts into something staccato and strange, led by Coope's expressive, layered voice.
Despite the suggestion of antiquity that runs through 'Darning Woman', Coope, 21, who lives in Brooklyn, is a very contemporary artist. Born to an English father and an American mother (whose original Martin acoustic she uses to compose), she grew up in the New York village of Cold Spring. The solitary landscapes and small towns of the Hudson Valley populate his compositions, providing wintery settings for the acrobatics of his voice. She began recording music while staying at a relative's empty house in Beacon, New York, experimenting with recording software in an empty living room, singing directly into the open space . Until then, Coope had only considered herself a visual artist, not a musician, but she immediately felt like she belonged. Throughout the following year, she strived to invent the lush and vast universe that we find here.
