About event

Lukáš is a lecturer at the University of Reading and specializes in urban planning and economics. He received his doctorate at the London School of Economics and before that he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of CTU and at CERGE-EI. In addition, he worked as the head of the Strategy and Development Office at IPR Prague and collaborated with the real estate department of Deloitte.

The lecture will focus on why and how cities are planned, and what planning causes - and all that perspective of urban economy. The aim is to show how seemingly less related areas such as residential densities, land prices, housing prices, commuting costs, labor productivity and quality of life in cities are intrinsically linked and influenced by urban planning. Finally, we will get down to how planning affects housing affordability and for whom it is beneficial and for whom it is not. The lecture loosely follows on from the public lecture in the Club House from January 2023, which was also devoted to the influence of planning, but at the regional level.

The idea for the first lecture came from Tomáš Kosnar when he commented on Lukáš's post about his presentation of research on conference at the World Bank. The first lecture took place in January 2023 and a recording of it is available below. This second lecture in a row is at the same time an extension of the "Urban Economics course", which is organized by the Institute of Spatial Planning FA CTU.
