About event
The latest discoveries from the territory of the First Bulgarian Empire (681 – 1018) revise the previous view of early medieval power centers in the Balkans. They primarily include the residences of the Bulgarian rulers in Pliska and Preslav. A story is known from historical sources about how Khan Krum had a goblet made from the skull of the Byzantine emperor Nikephoros I and drank with it while feasting in Pliska. Preslav became a refuge for pupils of Cyril and Methodius, expelled from Great Moravia. With the support of Tsar Simeon, they founded a school here, which became a center of Slavic literature in the 10th century. Archaeological research, which began at both locations at the end of the 19th century, uncovered the palaces of the rulers, residences of aristocrats, pagan and Christian sacred buildings, as well as the dwellings of ordinary people. However, only large-scale geophysical prospecting from recent years revealed the extent of both metropolises. They allowed us to reconstruct their appearance, to think about their functioning and to compare them with other centers of their time.
