Beni Hassan in Central Egypt is one of the most famous burials of dignitaries from the Middle Reich. Decorated rock tombs are still a magnet for tourists. Between 1902 and 1904, however, John Garstang from the University of Liverpool also uncovered almost 900 shaft graves, which were the last resting place of members of the lower middle class. Among the countless findings were more than 200 painted coffins, which fell into oblivion and are museums around the world. In the lecture we will follow their footsteps, look into the archaeological practice of the beginning of the 20th century and with the help of preserved photographs from the research we build the original grave equipment. We will also bring you closer to the decoration of coffins and its importance and get to know the working procedures of ancient Egyptian artists. Dr. Ľubica Hudáková, Egyptologist.
