Why is Egor Letov needed by everyone today? Presentation of Alexander Gorbachev’s book “He Saw the Sun”
Dienstag 18. November, 19:00 - 21:00
Babel Books Berlin
The series “Outsource”, rapper Feduk, writer Mikhail Elizarov, director Kirill Serebrennikov, the group Shortparis and even politician Sergei Mironov - for all these people and phenomena Yegor’s legacy turned out to be important and significant Letov, leader of the Civil Defense group. How did it happen that a man who was considered a fringe and radical during his lifetime turned out after his death to be almost the most influential figure in Russian-speaking culture of the last 50 years? How exactly did Letov influence modern music, literature and theater - and what is his place in the cultural pantheon? Why can Letov be especially valuable today - and how do his songs and creative strategies help to survive and overcome the disaster?
Alexander Gorbachev, the author of the book “He Saw the Sun,” the first detailed biography of Letov, which was published this year and grew out of the podcast of the same name, will try to answer all these questions in his speech. The book tells about the life and adventures of Letov in the broad context of Soviet and post-Soviet history - and at the presentation Gorbachev will also talk about how music grows out of the surrounding reality and how it can change and overcome it.
