FIELD [3] — Uncovering landscape identity with botanist Ján Albert Šturm (excursion start: plague column)

Terrain: "Banskoštiavnice", i.e. hilly, perhaps also bushy

Finally we will travel through Banskoštiavnice terrain! Czech botanist Jan Albert Šturma will take us on an excursion. How is the rich cultural history reflected in the landscape and vegetation? We will look for relict plants, botanical connections and among all that, forgotten bushes in the heaps, steep city paths and in the ruins of Glanzenberg. Landscape memory is also defined by biological history, a tangle of ecological ties. How did millennia of mining, logging and deforestation affect these ties? And how to actively cooperate with such a mining country? These are just some of the questions to which we will look for answers together on the route Morový stúl (center) - Hájovňa (forest).

Jan Albert Šturma (1981) studied geobotany at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Charles University. It focuses primarily on the phenomenon of the so-called "new wilderness", urban and suburban vegetation, ethnobotany, landscape ecology and shrubs. Together with a colleague, he wrote the book Wild nature of Prague and its surroundings, which is a kind of guide to the urban jungle and bears the apt subtitle: "A guide to that part of Prague's nature that no one cares about, few know about and almost no one likes". This topic was later covered in the documentary film Planeta Praha. However, Sturm's work and thinking as a geobotanist also has artistic overlaps, which he presented in several galleries and especially during many walks and excursions through industrial urban landscapes, "non-places" and brownfields. And finally, it should not be forgotten that he is also the co-founder of the ecological-performative movement Krovinár.

FIELD is a series of cross-field discussions in which we get to know the landscape together. Not only with the eyes, but also with the smell, taste, touch, and ears of various scientists, enthusiasts and artists. We are interested in long-term work and research in the field, various professional fields - ornithology, speleology, botany, film documentary, or acoustic ecology. We will wade through the land, crawl, descend into its bowels, slowly recede before it is flooded. We will taste it, inhale it, hear its voice, even allow ourselves to be contaminated by it. The discussions will be led by three field amateurs, a cross-country ring, three searchers: Jakub Juhás, Michaela Cagáňová, Zoltán Czakó.
