About event
The Phantasm Viol Consort started its own concert series in mid-March 2025 in the St. Elisabeth Church in Berlin-Mitte. The concerts are entirely dedicated to polyphony and each focus on one composer.
The second concert, "Orlando Gibbons, Peerless Polyphonist", celebrates one of Britain's most important musicians, whose 400th death anniversary is commemorated this year. Gibbons was already very popular with clients and audiences during his lifetime, and he was and is still revered by musicians today: his contemporary William Byrd called him a “musical genius,” and Glenn Gould described his music as the one that “moved him more than any other sound experience.”
After the concert, Phantasm invites the audience to a free drink at the bar - you can ask anything you ever wanted to know about viols, gibbons, consorts, etc.!

The second concert, “Orlando Gibbons, Peerless Polyphonist”, pays tribute to one of Britain’s greatest musicians, commemorating the 400th anniversary of his death this year. Gibbons was adored in his own day by audiences and patrons alike, and he continues to inspire musicians across the centuries. William Byrd once called him a “musical genius,” and Glenn Gould confessed that Gibbons’s music “moved me more deeply than any other sound experience.”
After the performance, Phantasm warmly invites you to join them for a complimentary drink at the bar—your chance to ask all the questions you’ve ever had about viols, gibbons, consort music, and more!
