Krkonoše before the First World War was a poor region where Czech element with German. At the beginning of the century, the mountains began to change dynamically, thanks in particular to one novelty in the Czech lands – skis. Bohumil Hanč was the most famous Czech skier who won competitions at home and abroad. The versatile athlete Emerich Rath was the only German who regularly participated in Czech races, the other Germans from the Giant Mountains boycotted them for national reasons. Hanč and Rath knew each other well, they also met at the start of the fateful race in 1913. After the first lap, the weather worsened sharply, a blizzard broke out. All the competitors gave up, Hanč was left alone on the track. It was Emerich Rath who found him half-dead and tried to save him at the risk of his own life, unfortunately in vain. Later, a frozen Václav Vrbata, Hanč's friend, who wanted to support him on the track and lent him his coat in a violent blizzard, is also found in the mountains...
