About event

How is Taiwanese literature doing in the Czech Republic and what is being translated from Czech in Taiwan? How do translators deal with the cultural differences between the two countries? This and much more will be discussed by the translator Pavlína Krámská and exceptionally also the translator from Czech Kai Shih.

Pavlína Krámská will talk about the book Letní dešte (Mi:Lù Publishing 2024), Tong Wei-ger's experimental prose with autobiographical elements, for which the translator received the Creative Prize of the Translators' Community in 2025. And she looks back at this year's edition of the Prague book fair World of Books, which was visited by Taiwanese authors Wu Ming-Yi and Liao Hung-Chi and whose books she also had the opportunity to translate. Pavlína Krámská co-founded Mi:Lù Publishing, through which she promotes Taiwanese literature in the Czech Republic.

Bohemian Kai Shih, living in Prague, will present his translation of Kristina Hamplová's novel Lover/Fighter (Dokořán 2024). For the translation, he also won the Susanna Roth Award in 2025, which is organized by the Czech Centers as part of the promotion of awareness of Czech literature abroad.

In addition to the specifics of the translation between Czech and Chinese, the mentioned titles will lead translators to, for example, the question of coming of age and the influence of the environment in literature.
