The Malostranský hřbitov association would like to invite you to the lecture "Digging up the treasure – charms, spirits and gems in the early modern age", which will take place on Tuesday, November 26, from 5 p.m. at the branch of the Municipal Library in Prague at Smíchov, Nám. October 14, 15. The lecture will focus on the fascinating phenomenon of treasure hunting in the pre-modern era, when the belief spread not only among the nobles but also among the common people that various lost riches could be found with the help of mystical practices and magic. Listeners will learn how these practices and stories developed, what they looked like, and how they influenced culture and society. Treasure hunting at this time was not only a physical activity, but also represented a metaphysical journey in which magic and the summoning of spirits played an important role. Mystical rituals, spells, but also Christian religious practices were also often important for seekers, which were supposed to ensure protection from supernatural forces or enable access to valuables. The lecture will also provide insight into the legal and social aspects of treasure hunting. The aim is not only to investigate how the named phenomenon contributed to the formation of early modern culture and folklore, but also to analyze how this phenomenon was reflected in people's relationship to magic, the supernatural, invisible worlds, but also religion.

Lecture will be a long-term associate of the Mgr. Helena Chalupová, Ph.D. et Ph.D. from the Institute of Czech History, Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University.
