About event
The fourth excursion of my new series of walks around Prague will be devoted not just to a separate area, but to a specific topic - the hidden symbols of Prague Castle. Usually, while walking here, we talk about the most significant things - about Czech history and its ups and downs, about Czech saints and legends associated with them, about the ruling dynasties and their most prominent representatives, about royal regalia and other unique valuables stored here. At the same time, losing sight (banally due to lack of time) is what at first glance does not evoke enthusiastic exclamations or the desire to capture it from all possible angles, but which hides a lot of interesting facts and non-trivial stories about the daily life of the inhabitants of the City or little-known pages its rich in secrets of the past.
Actually, this is precisely what this cycle of excursions is aimed at - to reveal for you in a new way the seemingly familiar and places and objects studied far and wide, revealing new facets and a new depth of perception of Prague, which is so infinitely multifaceted and bottomless in its information content.
What exactly will be discussed during the Sunday excursion:
- about the obvious and hidden messages embedded in the design of the front gate of the former royal residence
- about the history of the oldest Prague church and its artifacts that have survived to this day
- about the removal and the return after 100 years of the imperial eagle to the peak of the Lion Fountain
- about the meanings inherent in the design of the facade of St. Vitus Cathedral, about the obvious and secret purpose of gargoyles (chimeras), as well as messages to descendants encrypted in its bas-reliefs
- about the history of the appearance of a 16-meter granite obelisk near the walls of the Cathedral and its hidden symbolism - about the oldest Prague street sculpture, monument to St. George the Victorious - about where it stood before and how many trials it has gone through during its 650-year history
- about the most massive among all Czech bells, the 15-ton Sigismund, the ringing of which can only be heard on Sundays (I hope we you'll be lucky 🙂)
- about how time used to be measured and why medieval dials didn’t there were minute hands
- about the symbolism and hidden message of the Golden Gate of St. Cathedral. Vita
- about the Migulka Tower and the modernized version of Prague Orloj, hidden from the eyes of tourists
