OPENING OF THE JUBILEE YEAR OF M. K. ČIURLIONIS. VILNIUS UNIVERSITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CONCERT

Next year marks an extraordinary anniversary – 150 years since the birth of the Lithuanian composer and artist Mikalojus Konstantin Čiurlionis. The first chord of the celebration will sound already at the end of this year, when the Chamber Orchestra of the Vilnius University under the leadership of conductor and artistic director Modestas Jankúnas will perform in the Czech Republic. The concert is called Friendship - like one of Čiurlionis' paintings - not by chance. On the occasion of the outgoing Year of Czech Music and the coming jubilee year of M. K. Čiurlionis in 2025, the compositions of this giant of Lithuanian music and the works of Czech classics will be performed.

M. K. Čiurlionis is considered the most important Lithuanian artist of all time, his personality combines great talent, strong imagination, passion for knowledge and, of course, Lithuanian melancholy. He can be described as a supporter of synesthesia - he saw music as colors and heard colors as music. He drew inspiration from many sources from Eastern cultures to traditional art. He combined symbols, mythological and religious motifs from various civilizations in his work, filled his works with landscapes of his homeland, motifs of Lithuanian mythology and folk art.

About the orchestra: The Chamber Orchestra of the Vilnius University (Lithuania) has been bringing together young people studying at this university for 45 years and has performed more than 800 concerts in Lithuania and abroad during its existence. In In 2017, it was declared the best ensemble at the World Orchestral Festival in Vienna and received a gold award and a special honorary diploma.

About the conductor: Modestas Jankūnas studied conducting at the Stasys Šimkus Conservatory in Klaipėda and choral conducting and symphonic conducting at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater in Vilnius. Since 2009, he has been choirmaster of the Pro Musica alumni choir of Vilnius University, assistant director of the Vilnius University Chamber Orchestra since 2015, and artistic director and conductor of the orchestra since 2019. He conducted the orchestra in renowned concert halls in Lithuania, Vienna, Bologna, Beijing, Shanghai and elsewhere.
