About event
💠 The heart of the Kwan Um Zen school is practice. Every moment we return to our original nature that exists before thoughts. Our founding teacher, Zen Master Seung Sahn, put it simply: "I don't know." This means opening up fully to each moment, perceiving clearly and acting with natural compassion and wisdom. Moment by moment...
Kwan Um Zen School Zen Centers around the world offer training in Zen practice through instruction, daily morning and evening practice, public lectures, teaching talks, retreats, workshops and community life. Our programs are open to everyone, regardless of previous experience.
The goal of the school is to make this practice of Zen practice available to the widest possible circle of people. Our desire is to help human beings find their true direction and contribute to the improvement of this world.
Regular practice in the style of the Kwan Um Zen school takes place regularly in the Good Teahouse in the attic, except for holidays such as 1/1/2025 (or changes are announced in google groups or chat groups to which you need to register) Just write to us.

🌿 About practice
Zen is not about thinking about yourself or analyzing thoughts. Inside, we do a simple thing, over and over again, moment by moment: we notice that the mind has latched onto something, and without struggle we return to experiencing the moment directly. We sit, breathe, perceive the body, sounds and space. When a thought, assessment or emotion comes, we just register it and let it go. We do not continue the story.
🌿 Natural consequences
This gradually increases clarity and creates space before the impulse: you notice anger, fear or desire before they turn into action, and you can decide whether to follow them.
🌿 Main meaning
The goal is not a "better state", but a clear mind and correct action in a specific situation, naturally and with with compassion.
Forms of practice:
🧘♂ Sitting practice - zazen (main form)
🌀 Sitting Zen practice focuses mainly on deep concentration and working with the mind.
---
🎶 Meditation by chanting sutras
🎼 Chanting sutras is not just a ritual. It is a form of shared practice that rests the mind on voice, breath and rhythm. It helps to unify attention, anchor the body and create a clear atmosphere for sitting.
🎯 Benefits of chanting sutras:
🔊 Concentration - the mind relies on sound, text and rhythm
🤝 Common practice - harmonizes the group and strengthens cohesion
🕊 Anchoring in tradition - reminds us of the direction of practice and connects us with the line of teachers
---
⚠ Important notice:
Zen practice is not suitable for people with serious psychological problems or those who are not in stable mental health, because it could worsen their condition.
