About event

I cordially invite you to my lecture on the topic: The influence of westernization on the Japanese artistic sphere in the second half of the 19th century.

At the lecture, we will focus on how Japanese art developed under the influence of Western concepts promoted and pushed by the Japanese government. We will also discuss what impact this had on the structuring and subsequent centralization of the Japanese art sphere.

My name is Nicole Valentová and I studied Japanese and Korean at SOAS University in London, where I was subsequently awarded a PhD in East Asian art history with a focus on pre-war Japan in December 2022. During my master's studies, I also added Mandarin Chinese to my language portfolio, which I am still actively improving.

As part of my studies and subsequent postdoctoral internship at Waseda University, I spent two years in Japan, during which I had several opportunities to create travel itineraries, which I then led as a tour guide.

After returning to my hometown of Uherské Hradiště in September 2023, I decided to leave the academy and dedicate myself to passing on the acquired knowledge, both professional and linguistic, within the private sector.

The desire to bring East Asia, and especially Japan, in its true essence and complexity to the wider public, gave rise to the idea of realizing it in the tourism industry. The establishment of the own travel agency CK Niké Veritas in the spring of this year was the ideal culmination of a more than ten-year long journey full of trying to understand a different culture and trying to find a way to meaningfully apply the acquired knowledge and experience.
