About event
Foreign or ours? The Jews between German and Czech
The language preferences of Jews living in the Czech lands were not only a question of identity, but also social and cultural anchorage. Their development was dynamic and often ambiguous. They played a crucial role especially during the process of Czechoslovak national emancipation. Contemporary historiography seeks to revise stereotypes concerning mainly the dependence of the national identity of Jews from Bohemia and Moravia on their linguistic-cultural preferences and homogeneity of the linguistic-cultural identity of the Jewish minority of the Czech lands in general. It is based primarily on the situation of the Jews in Bohemia, the specifics of Moravian Jews, whose history was different, remain somewhat neglected. The lecture will focus on these gaps, try to fill them, but of course the basic components of linguistic and cultural and national identities of Czech and Moravian Jews in general and the influence of these components on the "Jewish" view of the formation of the Czech national story.
Lecturer: Mgr. Ivana Cahová, Ph.D
will also take place as part of the lecture at OEI Brno from 16:30 (workshop from 16:30 at OEI Brno is in German, lecture at MZK from 19:00 is in Czech)
