About event
Death is an inseparable part of human life, and the way in which individual generations coped with it opens a unique window into the past.
The lecture will focus on the development of burial customs and rituals in the territory of Bratislava and wider Hungary - how society buried its dead, how it faced epidemics and how death and disease were recorded in the public space in the form of cemeteries, infirmaries or plague columns.
What was the role of the mourners, what happened in the home when the dead were laid out, why did the clock stop, open the windows and cover the mirrors? What subsequently happened during the mourning period?
Attention will also be paid to the symbolism itself - from simple tombstones and medieval epitaphs to art nouveau tombstones with rich iconography. What do angels with crossed arms, a broken pillar, a weeping willow or veiled urns mean? What was the significance of the location of the graves, the method of burying the deceased and what role did funeral fraternities play?
The lecture will also show how society's attitude towards death and the afterlife changed - from a strong belief in salvation through the baroque "memento mori" to Enlightenment rationalism and the romantic cult of the monument.
A special space will also be given to important Bratislava cemeteries - Andrew's Cemetery, Evangelical cemeteries and Jewish cemeteries, which are today an irreplaceable part of the city's historical memory.
The aim of the lecture is not only to present the facts, but also to help better understand how our ancestors perceived the finitude of life and how we read their legacy in the silence of gravestones and cemeteries, which are often hidden chronicles of history.
