Radomyr Mokryk: Culture and Colonialism: Ukraine in the Soviet Empire
Venue: FF UK Main Building, Room 313.
The current Russo-Ukrainian war is largely based on Russian imperialist tradition. The idea of the Russian military-political elites that "Ukraine belongs to Russia" did not arise in the 21st century. This is a long-term vision that was cultivated in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.
The lecture by Ukrainian historian Radomyr Mokryk offers a look at the story of Russian-Ukrainian relations through a colonial lens. The focus is on the late Soviet period (1956–1991). The national policy of the Soviet leadership, especially on the cultural level, gives the opportunity to talk about colonial strategies. Massive linguistic Russification, a specific interpretation of history and the use of culture to create a stereotypical image of Ukrainians - all this strongly resembles a standard policy that can be characterized as colonization.
Was Ukraine a colony and the USSR an empire? What role did culture play in the national politics of the USSR? How did this policy affect Ukrainian dissent? How does Ukraine emerge from the shadow of the empire today and what role does culture and history play in the Russian-Ukrainian war? We will seek answers to these questions at our meeting at FF UK on 16 October at... (date, time, room)
