About event
We would like to invite you to show the book Dr. Daniela Richter (King’s College London) Watching the Jackals, Prague's Covert Liaisons with Cold War Terrorists and Revolutionaries. The doctor prepared the introductory word and with her comments will perform Dr. Mikuláš Pešta (ÚSD Faculty of Arts, Charles University) and Petr Kaňák (MV ČR).
The event is organized by the Institute of World History, Cold War Research Group and Association of History Students.
We attach the annotation of the book:
In the 70s and 80s. Prague has become a popular goal of the world's most important terrorists and revolutionaries. They came here to seek refuge, relax or organize secret meetings to ensure training, weapons and other forms of support. While some were welcome with open arms, others were carefully monitored and finally expelled. Based on the recently declassified documents, the author reveals contacts of the Czechoslovak Communist regime with the different factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization and some of the most famous terrorists of that time, including Carlos Šakal, the Massacre Commander at the Munich ABUDA or Abu Nidal. The author captures why these terrorists tended to Prague, how Czechoslovak officials responded to their visits. Last but not least, it reveals the role of Czechoslovak security and intelligence services in these relationships. Based on interviews and extensive archival research, the book offers a unique view of how states use spies to promote their policy and also use new evidence to discuss whether the Soviet block supported terrorism.
