About event
Cinema release: November 13th, 2025
Actor: Manuel Harder, Bea Brocks
Director: Malte Wirtz
The film follows Malte Wirtz's probationary period at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, where the piece A IST NOT B is being created together with Bea Brocks and Manuel Harder. The film was shot in an extraordinary time; when the corona pandemic was still determining public life and at the same time Russia was attacking Ukraine.
Two actors, one play - and no end in sight. BACKSTAGE is a comic documentary about the place where the “big drama” never reaches the stage, but instead fades away in the rehearsal room. Between textual uncertainty, oversized egos and the eternal search for the "right" tone, an absurdly intimate portrait of the actor's life emerges: whoever laughs is still rehearsing - whoever cries is already acting.
While the world outside continues to run, inside two artists are struggling with forgotten missions, crooked punch lines and the existential question: Is this already art or is it still warming up? A film about theater that is never finished and that is exactly where its comic magic unfolds.
