📞 Intercepted | Captured calls
(d. Oksana Karpovych | Canada, France, Ukraine | 2024 | 95 min. Intercepted is trying to find an answer through two parallel worlds. The camera captures the destruction in unhappy shots in which we see Ukrainian villages, towns, houses and highways after their liberation from the Russian occupation. We are looking closely. Not to the abyss of destruction and death, but rather to places that are again fulfilled by life. This gives hope and serves to balance the normalization of horror in the media. Specifically, the scenes instead of an infinite visual flood. The film is shocked by a contrasting sound track. We hear records of telephone conversations between Russian soldiers in Ukraine and their families, which in 2022 was captured by the Ukrainian secret service. It is difficult to decide which stimulus is more devastating: confessing soldiers to rape, looting and brutal torture of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war, or mostly female voices echoing from their homes that testify to chauvinism and hate, misinformation and schizophrenic propaganda. Sound and image are parallel and their surprising connection in the cinematographic space is an interesting whole.
