(Hamnet) * GB/US 2025 * Director: Chloé Zhao (NOMADLAND) * With: Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Emily Watson and others * 125 min. FSK 12
With HAMNET, Oscar® winner Chloé Zhao returns to the big screen. The film adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Maggie O'Farrell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Zhao, tells the story of William Shakespeare's family. From the perspective of his sensitive wife Agnes, you see how she falls in love with the great bard and the two plan a life together. When her only son Hamnet dies in the plague at the age of eleven, their true love threatens to be suffocated. In the midst of this terrible personal tragedy, Shakespeare, in deep despair and sadness, begins to write “Hamlet,” one of the great plays in literary history. (rental)
