(Paternal Leave) * Director: Alissa Jung
With: Luca Marinelli, Arturo Gabbriellini, Juli Grabenhenrich and others
113 min. FSK 12
Film in German/English/Italian with German subtitles
In the middle of the harsh winter, 15-year-old Leo (Juli Grabenhenrich) travels to the coast of northern Italy to find the man who has been missing all these years: her father Paolo (Luca Marinelli). What begins as a quiet hope becomes an encounter with old wounds and new longings. Paolo, long anchored in another life, is unsettled by Leo's appearance. Between silence, anger and languages that are foreign, father and daughter feel their way towards each other.
PATERNAL LEAVE is a moving father-daughter drama about closeness and distance, about responsibility, failures - and the tender hope of a new beginning. Poetic and full of emotional power, the film tells how difficult and beautiful it can be to really meet each other in individual moments. (rental)
