About event

🗓 On Monday, November 25, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., a presentation of the Slovak translation of the biography of JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL, one of the most important Bratislava natives in the field of classical music, will take place in the Albrecht House.

📙 Title from the pen of a leading American performer and expert on the music of the 18th and 19th centuries Mark Kroll was published by the Music Center in 2023 in English original and this year in a Slovak translation.

Markéta ŠTEFKOVÁ as the author of several studies about Hummel and on behalf of the active interpreters of Hummel's music Jordana PALOVIČOVÁ, Juraj TOMKA and Martin KRAJČO. 🤝 The event is held in cooperation with the Music Center and the civic association ALBRECHT FORUM, o.z.

ℹ️ Johann Nepomuk Hummel: The Life and World of a Musician is not just a book about a great artist whom history seems to have forgotten, although that would be reason enough to write it. It is also a book about the many worlds he lived in. Hummel worked in one of the most dynamic periods in the history of music, in the middle of the transition from classical to romantic interpretation and compositional styles. As Mozart's most famous student, Haydn's protégé, and Beethoven's friend and main competitor, he was the ultimate classicist. Romantic Hummel, however, greatly influenced the next generation of composers, especially Schubert, Schumann, Liszt and Chopin.

📖 This book is the first ever modern monograph that deals with Hummel's career in its entirety. It is a rich and complex story not only about a great musician, but also about a dynamically changing world, a story that offers us a comprehensive picture of one of the key moments in the history of music, as well as the role of a musician in society at that time.

🎓 MARK KROLL has been working as a successful performer, scientist and educator for over fifty years. In addition to this book, Kroll's publications about Hummel and his music include a facsimile edition of the Piano School, an urtext edition of the Sonata for Cello and Piano Op. 104 (Bärenreiter), two specialist editions of Hummel's arrangements of the operatic and symphonic repertoire for chamber ensemble, as well as numerous articles. Kroll is also the author of The Cambridge Companion to the Harpsichord; Ignaz Moscheles and the Changing World of Musical Europe; The Beethoven Violin Sonatas; Playing the Harpsichord Expressively; The Boston School of Harpsichord Building and Bach, Handel and Scarlatti: Reception in Britain 1750–1850.

"I gladly accepted the Music Center's offer to prepare the second edition of the book, especially because it is being published in Hummel's birthplace. It is also an opportunity for me to correct mistakes from of the first edition and to supplement the book with everything we have discovered and found out about Hummel's life and music over the past years Nepomuk has played a lot. There have been many excellent recordings and performances of his music of all genres, and their number is constantly increasing. Hummel's scholarly research is also expanding and enriching: quality editions of Hummel's compositions are being published, as well as useful studies on various aspects of his life. and career. It gives me deep satisfaction that Hummel is no longer known only as the composer of that famous trumpet concerto."
(Excerpt from the author's preface to the second English edition and Slovak translation of the publication.)
